Looking back on Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Issy Mirfin

As we all know October is known as the pink month, we wear pink bows for cheer, the football players wear pink socks, and people wear pink ribbons. But what is this all for? This is for breast cancer awareness month.

What is cancer? Cancer is when something goes wrong in the process of as you get older, your cells die. Your cells keep creating new cells, and if the old cells aren’t dying, it’s going to take over the other cells and be very hard for your body to fight this. There are many different types of cancer, and it can happen anywhere in your body.

“Hematologic (blood) cancers are cancers of the blood cells, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Solid tumor cancers are cancers of any of the other body organs or tissues. The most common solid tumors are breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers.” said About Cancer

Some types of cancer respond to medicine, but others respond more to drugs and Chemotherapy. There are 4 stages of cancer. Stage 1 and 2 meaning the cancer hasn’t spread that much, but stages 3 and 4 meaning that the cancer has spread alot and it’s getting bad. Stage 4 is the highest stage of cancer that can happen.

Now that we know what normal cancer is, what is breast cancer? This type of cancer is when breast cancer cells form together to form a tumor that can be seen in an x-ray as a lump. This type of cancer is mostly seen in women, but it can also be seen in men. Breast cancer can spread when the cells get into the blood or lymph system and it can spread.

I think that it’s really good that there are charities, fundraisers, and that we are raising awareness for this type of cancer. With people still wearing pink every October, if people have lost anyone they love to breast cancer, they can feel happy and welcome that people are bringing their attention to it.
