People all over the world have been using and enjoying social media for almost 40 years, but experts are saying that it has a negative impact on users- especially teens.

“Even though I only use social media for business purposes, I think that social media could be good or bad, depending on what you use it for,” said Amelie Voung, 7.

Social media platforms have a wide range of purposes, and what you’re looking for makes the effects vary. Many people use social media for business, art inspiration, news sharing, and entertainment.

While teens can use social media to connect and create friendships with others, they also [are exposed to] cyberbullying, trolls, toxic comparisons, sleep deprivation, and [diminished] face-to-face interactions,” said Katie Hurley, LSCW.

Although social media can be a positive source for inspiration, it can also become toxic with the wrong use. In fact, Remedy Health Media says that social media can create a “culture of comparison,” and negatively affect teen mental health. The constant comparison on social media creates self doubt and a lack of self confidence.

“I feel like social media can go either way; it just depends on how you use it. It can be really fun, but it changes peoples’ lifestyles into what they see on social media,” said Reeyan Ahmed, 7.

Social media can be a good resource and a place to connect, but overall, it may have a negative impact.
