Since the 17th century, people all over the world are addicted to caffeine, a compound found in tea
and coffee-related substances because it provides energy.
“I think caffeine is something that makes you hyper and stay up all night,” said Hudson Empey, 7.
Caffeine is the world’s most consumed psychoactive (a chemical substance that changes brain function) drug, and its found in tea, coffee, and energy drinks. Caffeine is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system, causing increased alertness to the brain. It’s found in seeds, nuts, and some plant leaves.
“It tastes good and gives you strength,” said Cole Faulkner
The reason most people drink caffeine is because it gives them energy. Some popular caffeine products are energy drinks, sodas, expressos, tea, hot cocoa, and even dark chocolate.
“It has an effect on our growth and just your overall health,” said Presley Senn, 8.
Caffeinated coffee actually reduces mouth and throat cancer by 50%, and decreases the risk of type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, drinking caffeine has its cons too, caffeine can interfere with your sleep, raise your blood pressure, and may cause insomnia. “ I think that with caffeine addiction, especially at this age, is not really like a safe thing to be addicted to, it’s kinda like vaping,” said Presley Senn, 8.
The effects of caffeine are similar to those of drugs and alcohol. It gives you an interesting feeling that you would want again and you eventually believe you depend on it. As a result, you drink more and more caffeine to feel the same effects. Caffeine looks like adenosine, which is naturally produced in the body, so it blends in with it and blocks them off. Adenosine gives the feeling of tiredness, so when they’re blocked, you feel alert and awake. Additionally, it releases dopamine and adrenaline into your body.
“When you see kids our age come to school with a coffee in their hand and you ask them like, ‘hey why do you bring this’ and there like cause I need it,” said Presley Senn, 8.
Caffeine is very addictive because of the way the drug makes your brain feel aware. This is a feeling that many people crave. Caffeine addiction is calculated not by how much you consume, but by how much it affects your body. If you feel distressed or have negative effects from caffeine, then you might have a caffeine addiction.
According to AddictionCenter, “Most experts advise that adults should consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day – the equivalent of approximately four cups of coffee.” It depends on how your body reacts, even less than 400 milligrams could be bad for you.
All in all, while drinking caffeine has its benefits, it also has its cons.
