Willow Springs’ last play of the year, Charlotte’s Web, will be coming this spring. The performances in the WSMS cafe will be on April 26-28 at 7 pm and a special matinee on Saturday at 2 pm.

Charlotte’s Web was first published as a book in 1952 and is about a girl named Fern adopting Wilbur, the pig, who is about to go into the slaughterhouse. She then cares for it until he matures, and then gives it to a dear friend of her father’s. Charlotte, a spider, then helps Wilbur stand out and live a greater and more substantial life. This play is mainly about Wilbur’s crazy adventures of trying to strive and stay alive.

“The reason I tried out for Charlotte’s Web was that it was a fairytale/movie that I grew up with and the story is very close to my heart. The movie presents a lot of good lessons and I thought the play would be even better,” seventh-grader, Savannah Starr, said.

Auditions were held on March 5-6 after school, and there was a variety of roles that the students could audition for.

“I was in Madagascar and I really enjoyed it, so I thought it would be fun to audition in Charlotte’s Web,” seventh-grader, Clay Dierks, said.

Incoming sixth-graders who are interested in theatre were given the opportunity to try out and show their skills. Many of these sixth-graders were in Madagascar.

“I chose to do this play because I got to help with OAP and I wanted to participate more in this program. I am learning so much from little things like opening the shop door to learning how to get true persistence and how to get things done,” sixth-grader from Sloan Creek Intermediate School, Zoe Smithy, said.

Work on this production started March 19th, which was right after spring break. Rehearsals are every day after school from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Time spent on this play is very valuable because there will only be 21 rehearsals until the first show.

“Well we act our scripts out, do blocking, and have fun with our fellow actors,” seventh-grader, Chloe Nelson, said.

One takeaway from this play is about how one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and there’s always someone willing to help a friend in need. This was shown throughout performance when Charlotte decided to help Wilbur because out of the kindness of her heart.
